A Prayer of Thanksgiving
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the gift of our college community. We give thanks for the dedicated staff who pour their hearts into educating and guiding our students, for their wisdom, patience, and tireless efforts.
We thank You for our students, for their eagerness to learn, their resilience, and their unique gifts and talents. May they continue to grow in knowledge and character. And we are deeply grateful for our families, for their unwavering support, their partnership, and the love they provide.
Thank You for the spirit of learning and improvement that permeates our college. We pray that You continue to bless our efforts, guiding us in the pursuit of truth, wisdom, and compassion. May Your grace be upon us all as we move forward.
Amen.
As we head into the upcoming break, we wish everyone a wonderful and well-deserved rest. Please take this time to relax, recharge your batteries, and enjoy time with loved ones. We look forward to seeing you all refreshed and ready for a successful and productive second semester!

Vinnies Service Medallion Program
We’re excited to share a new initiative now available to our students – the Vinnies Service Medallion (VSM) Program, a student-focused service and leadership opportunity developed by the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW.
The VSM Program is designed to foster a heart for social justice while giving students practical ways to make a difference in their community. Through a flexible, recognition-based model, students in Years 7-12 can take part in service initiatives such as fundraising drives, awareness campaigns, volunteering (such as with the Vinnies Van), and advocacy work - both within the school and beyond.
This program celebrates real-world contributions and helps students develop valuable skills in leadership, teamwork, initiative, and communication. Students are recognised with certificates and medallions, and their efforts can support applications for scholarships, tertiary education, and employment.
How it works:
- Students participate in VSM-approved activities.
- They upload a short description and a photo of their involvement.
- A staff member confirms participation – no grades or formal assessments required.
- Optional reflection tools are available to support deeper learning.
There are five levels of recognition, starting from a Bronze Certificate for introductory engagement, progressing through to the Gold Level for sustained, student-led impact.
Whether students engage through school projects, parish youth groups, or independent volunteering, the VSM provides a meaningful way to put faith and compassion into action.
We encourage all students to consider being part of this inspiring initiative. For more information take a look at the Program outline or see Mrs Gennat for more information. Students can sign up via this link.
Together, let’s continue building a culture of service, justice, and community at our school.
Hands that serve, hearts that care. Our school community proudly supporting the Vinnies Van in Term 2 and making a difference.

We have come to the end of another busy term at the College. The end of the first semester comes with its unique circumstances. The weather is cooler, many students and staff are tired and immune systems are low. The onslaught of assessments tasks and subsequent school reports can also make it quite a taxing time for all. We all need to try and take the time these holidays to try and relax and recuperate.
Rest can be difficult to define because it can look different for everyone. Rest is any behavior aimed at increasing physical or mental well-being. It can be active, such as going for a walk outside, or passive, such as taking 10 minutes to sit down and breathe deeply. Regardless of how you choose to rest, these daily behaviours can help you recover and recharge from physical and mental effort. That’s why better rest is linked to better physical and mental health.
The receiving of school reports this week can also be a stresser for some students and parents. Dealing with a school report, whether good or bad, requires a calm and constructive approach. It's important to approach it with a focus on understanding and improvement rather than solely on grades. Start by carefully reading the report, noting both strengths and areas needing attention. Discuss the report with your child, focusing on open communication and encouragement, rather than blame or punishment. Engage with the teacher to gain further clarity and develop a plan for support and improvement. Focus on understanding the feedback, discussing it with your child, and working together to identify areas for improvement or celebrate successes. Avoid comparing your child's report with others, and remember to emphasize their strengths and overall well-being.
We have had another very successful Kalawazi campaign this year. While we do not have any final numbers as yet, we can be assured that all monies raised will be put to great use by our friends in Malawi. It is never too late to give, so if you are in a position to sponsor a student ($50) for their 2026 educational costs please contact the Office.
A huge thank you to all who made the 25th year celebrations such as success and these include:
Our students from the graduating class of 2001 (Ashleigh, Ainslie & Erin) who spoke so passionately at the College Assembly about their Kawalazi experience along with Joseph Nolan who helped organise them for the assembly.
Members of the committee who organised the photo montage in the Subway.
Our College leaders for their efforts in selling Kawalazi produced materials.
The College Office who daily promoted the project and counted the money for our running tally.
Everyone and anyone who gave as much as they could to help this worthwhile cause.
Year 7D - first homeroom to raise $50
I hope all have a well earned rest and return to SJPC for what will no doubt be a busy semester two for 2025.
Until next time:
Semester Reports Year 7-10
Year 7-10 Academic Reports for Semester 1 have been published this week via Compass for families to access. An email has been sent to parents and carers explaining how to access their son/daughters Academic Report with an email link to our IT Staff, should there be any technical issues.
I hope these reports will be a change to both celebrate success and an opportunity to look for areas to improve academically in Semester 2.
The Importance of Academic Reports for parents:
Academic Reports can serve as a valuable instrument for fostering both student achievement and wellbeing, while also facilitating meaningful conversations around goals and their level of participation across the school community.
By reviewing grades, effort indicators, and teachers’ comments, families can collaboratively acknowledge areas of strength, identify potential challenges, and discuss the student’s sense of engagement across various subjects and activities.
Such discussions enable students to reflect on their interests, motivations, and areas for growth, leading to the establishment of realistic and purposeful goals for future learning. Prioritising both academic progress and active engagement contributes significantly to students’ sense of connection, confidence, and overall wellbeing, enhancing their chances for long-term success.
Our Leader of Pedagogy, Mrs Maybury has aligned all of the above in our Student Engagement Continuum, which may be of use for parents and families to begin this conversation following this week’s Academic Reports.

As we wrap up Term 2, we would like to take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding achievements of a group of dedicated Year 9 students who received College Commendation Awards in Week 8.
These awards recognise students who have consistently demonstrated excellence in their learning, positive behaviour, leadership, or contributions to the college community. It is always inspiring to see our students striving to do their best and setting a great example for others.

Haira Haira Ri | Jayden Dosanjh | Max Corsalini | Evie Gibson |
Mia Henry | Ivy Ryan | Aribelle Dawes | Isabella Gray |
We also want to acknowledge the fantastic memories made at the Great Aussie Bush Camp this week. We are proud of your efforts and the positive impact you’ve made in our school. Keep up the fantastic work!
Year 10
Celebrating Student Effort and Community Spirit
As we come to the close of a busy term, we take this opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding efforts and unwavering commitment of our students. It has been a term full of learning, growth, and shared experiences that have highlighted the heart of our school community.
From the outset, many of our students have shown incredible initiative and compassion. A key highlight was the Year 10 Ministry’s Vinnies Winter Appeal Markets, held during recess times. This initiative raised much needed support for those in our wider community who are doing it tough this winter, and we are deeply proud of the generosity demonstrated by our students. We are also incredibly thankful for the generous support shown in raising funds for the Kawalazi community. The spirit of giving and global awareness that our students continue to demonstrate is something we are truly proud of. Towards the end of the term, we also had the opportunity to come together for a Reflection Day, focusing on the importance of positive relationships. This valuable time away from the classroom encouraged personal growth, deeper connections, and meaningful discussion.
Throughout the term, many of our students have proudly represented the school in sporting events, including the Athletics Carnival, showcasing teamwork, discipline, and school spirit. Equally impressive was the annual School Talent Show, a joyful celebration of creativity that gave students across all year levels a chance to shine, some of whom don’t often get the spotlight. It was inspiring to see such a wide range of talents on display. Our gifted musicians also took to the stage, treating us to a concert that was the perfect way to round off the term. Their dedication and passion continue to uplift our school community.
In addition, we commenced the Year 11 and 12 subject selection process, supporting students as they begin to shape their senior years and future pathways. This exciting time brings with it reflection and exploration as students make important choices for the next stage of their learning journey.
As we look ahead to next term, we are excited to continue our spiritual journey, with our annual retreat taking place in Week 3. We will also continue providing guidance and information regarding subject selection for the 2026–2027 school year.
Congratulations to those students who have received Commendation Awards over the term:
Jaxon Heida | Alisha Little | Cooper Shaw | Patrick Valentic |
Ashton Lockyer | Danielle Atkinson | Catherine Young | Ollie Jones |
Anna Matthew | Roman Pradhan | William Hawke | Payton McMurray |
Darcy Ryan | Cooper Gunther | Lola Mezzetti | Alexia Smith |
We thank all students, staff, and families for a wonderful term and wish everyone a safe and restful break.
This year we celebrated another successful NAIDOC event at St John Paul College. This is the school way of showing awareness of and respect for the traditional Aboriginal custodians of this land on which we meet, and to recognize the continuing connection of our Gumbaynggirr people to their Country, and waters. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of National Aborigines and Islander Day of Observance.
The day started with a Big Breakfast with many parents, students and staff enjoying a bacon and egg roll, along with OneMob Radio doing interviews with students for their morning broadcast. It then continued on into the Hall to participate in the NAIDOC assembly, run by the school leaders/Aboriginal students.
We must remember that NAIDOC is not just a celebration for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities but for all Australians.

LITERACY MATTERS
ALL THINGS LITERACY, BECAUSE LITERACY MATTERS IN ALL THINGS
Fluent reading is necessary for comprehension and there are several strategies that all readers can implement in order to improve fluency. Reading with a high level of fluency involves reading with the same speed as speaking, phrasing / chunking words, employing appropriate expression and, of course, decoding with fluidity and accuracy.
To improve reading accuracy, read out-loud.
To improve speed, practice repeated reading.
To improve phrasing and expression, practice echo reading.
To recognise the benefits of these strategies, record reading.
With repetition and fluency growth, the ability to comprehend will continue to develop. In turn, reading confidence will improve and enjoyment and engagement with reading material will flourish.
Reading with fluency means the brain has time to focus on meaning. We encourage engagement with reading material for all members of the household over the term break.

Jon Baldwin & Cory Blight
Teacher - Music
On Tuesday 24 June, the year 10 Ministry class visited St Francis Xavier in Woolgoolga to run a series of workshops focused on the theme of friendship with the Year 4 students. We led four interactive activities that encouraged teamwork and connection, including building challenges, acting scenarios, creative drawing tasks, and problem-solving exercises. Throughout the day, we formed meaningful bonds with the students, sharing stories and personal reflections on faith and friendship. It was a valuable opportunity to connect, inspire, and grow together.
We got to look at how the students negotiate and work out problems and see how they could have improved. Overall, it was a great and enriching experience because we got to share a day with young children of God.

College Athletics Carnival
All competitors, spectators, and staff had a wonderful day, as we undertook our 44th annual College Athletics Carnival on Friday, 27 July. House spirit was on show with a high number of participants representing in all events. The highlights of the carnival include the records broken by Evie Hill (Year 10) in both the long jump and the triple jump. The long jump record set in 1992 was broken by 10cm, while Evie also broke her own record set last year in the triple jump by a massive 88cm. The Casey relay team that broke the College record last year as a 13-year team, once again took to the track to represent Casey in the 14 years age group. They smashed the 14 years record set in 2000 by just over 2 seconds.
The House Captains were in fine form and led their houses with passion and pride. Congratulations to all participants, but as in all things, there can be only one winner. Congratulations to McAuley House - back on top again!

Thank you to the key stakeholders who make the carnival possible. Tanya Slaviero works tirelessly to ensure all is organised and perfect on the day for the students, while, without the Maintenance team, Administration team, Trish Stocks, and staff who help set up, run events, time, measure, and judge as well as supervise students, the carnival would not happen.
Those students who placed first and second in each event have progressed to represent the College at the Diocesan Athletics Carnival on 2 September at the CEX Stadium. A Compass event will go out to those students early in Term 3. If students wish to withdraw from the event, please decline immediately so that a replacement can be organised.

Bill Turner Football
Our wonderful girls' team dominated their game against Coffs Harbour High School in the Round 4 match of the Bill Turner Trophy Tournament. Never looking in doubt, the girls took control right from the beginning, winning 6 - 0. Scorers were Summer Barden (3), Eva Corsalini (1), Evie Gibson (1) and Pippa Dodd (1). The girls now play Oxley High in a home game. Details to come.
Cochrane Cup 14 League
Our 14-year League team participated in the Mid North Coast Final of the Cochrane Cup competition in Port Macquarie on Tuesday, 24 June. The boys were outstanding in all their games, making it through to the finals. Whilst they lost their finals match against St Paul’s, Kempsey on the buzzer 18-16, their performance has qualified them to progress to the Northern State Finals on 25 July in Coffs. Congratulations, boys, and good luck at the State finals!
Staff v Student Volleyball
We witnessed an exciting showdown as each of our houses faced off against the teachers in our much-anticipated Students vs Teachers Volleyball competition held on Tuesday, 22 June during lunch! McAuley House kicked things off with great energy, followed by a strong performance from Kelly. Casey House brought serious heat, and Hargraves wrapped up the matches with some impressive plays.
But the highlight? The All-Star match - the student team consisted of the top 3 student players from each house versus the best of the College staff. It was a thrilling, hard-fought game with plenty of action, laughter, and tenacity. It was an intense game, the teachers unleashed their competitive side and were determined to win. It was neck-and-neck the whole game, all coming down to the last ten seconds. Despite Harry the Hammer Harrison bringing the heat, it was no match for the students, with James Watson’s last second spike over the net, winning the game.
In the end, these matches weren’t just about winning—they were about school spirit, teamwork, and having fun together. A big thank you to all players, supporters, and organisers who made it happen, especially Mrs McAra, our fellow House Captains and Vice Captains and we can’t forget the teachers who gave it their all. Whether you were diving for the ball or cheering from the sidelines, you were part of something special. Let’s keep that spirit alive all year long!
North v South Diocesan Championships
On Wednesday 25 June, the Diocesan North v South Championships were played at the Synthetics Fields in Coffs Harbour. SJPC had 3 teams representing in the 4 divisions, with each winning through as Southern Diocesan Champions earlier in the month.
The junior girls' team took to the pitch first against Xavier Catholic College, Skinner's Head for what was expected to be a tight battle. It ended in a comfortable win 8 - 0. The senior girls also played Xavier, and while not as easily won, took control with a final score of 7 - 3. Our senior boys came up against St John’s College Woodlawn in their tussle but unfortunately could not get out of first gear with St John’s winning 5 - 1. The boys end up as Diocesan Runner-Up Champions, which is an excellent result and one of which they should be proud.
As both girls teams won their Diocesan Championship, they progressed to play the winners from the Armidale Diocese in back-to-back games. The junior girls played Holy Trinity from Inverell and won 8 - 2, while the senior girls defeated McCarthy College, Tamworth 6 - 0. Both girls have progressed in the CCC Tournament with further games to come next term.

AFLW Visit
On Friday 4 July, SJPC was fortunate to host several Sydney Swans AFLW team members who were in Coffs as part of a Community Camp program. The players had the opportunity to connect with women and girls in remote and regional communities, giving back to local schools and clubs while inspiring the next generation of AFLW stars. Our female AFL athletes were treated to an inspiring talk as well as an opportunity to meet and greet with the players. A chance to rub shoulders with current professional women athletes and be inspired to pursue their own sporting dreams was a wonderful experience to wrap up the term.

Congratulations
- Harper Dent (Year 10), who has been appointed to the NSW All Schools Hockey Officials team. This is a significant achievement and will require Harper to attend the NSW All Schools Hockey Tournament in Canberra from 2 August - 9 August. Good luck Harper!
- Congratulations to Ashton Herbert who represented NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools Golf Tournament last week in Dubbo. Ashton performed well in his first All Schools event and gained valuable experience. Well done Ashton!
- Harper Landrigan and Levi Newton represented the NSWCCC team at the U16’s All Schools championship in Sydney last weekend. Their team narrowly lost to ISA 15-14 then beat GPS 2 39-7 on Saturday. On Sunday, they played AICES for their final game and came away with a strong victory 45-17. Both the boys made their school proud with strong performance, and Levi even crossed the line for a couple of tries. Well done boys.
- Billy Backhouse (Year 8) travelled to Tasmania last Tuesday to play Water Polo at the National U13’s Development Carnival. He played in the Regional NSW State Team against teams from QLD, VIC, ACT, and NSW. This was a wonderful opportunity for him as a regional player. Well done Billy.
Leader of Sport Term 3 and 4
It is with mixed emotions that I sign off from my position as Leader of Sport and PDHPE teacher for the remainder of the year as I take long service leave. Carla Snow will more than capably fulfil the role in my absence, for which I am eternally grateful. Tanya Slaviero will continue in her role as assistant to the Leader of Sport and will continue to take the lead on all things to do with internal school sport and the sport selection process.
I wish our athletes and teams well for the remainder of the year and look forward to reading about their efforts and successes as they continue to participate in the many sporting opportunities available to them. I will be back on deck at the start of 2026.

Many of us are feeling the cold this time of year, but whilst we have warm homes and beds to comfort us, this is not the reality for many living on the streets.
The College has started the 2025 Vinnies Winter Appeal, and we are calling on the community to donate beanies and blankets that can be given to the local conference.
So if you have any blankets and beanies you would like to donate, please give them to the College office.
